Technical Diving
What’s Actually in a Tec Diver’s Rig? Redundancy, Explained
Watch a technical diver kit up and it can look faintly absurd. Two big cylinders on the back, more clipped to the sides, hoses running everywhere, gauges and spools and clips dangling off every ring. Next to a recreational diver’s single tank, it looks like someone preparing for war.

But there’s no clutter here. Every single piece is answering the same question, over and over: what happens if this fails? Understand that one idea and a tec rig stops looking like chaos and starts looking like exactly what it is.
The one idea behind all of it: redundancy
On a recreational dive, if something goes wrong you head for the surface. A technical diver gives up that option. With a decompression ceiling overhead, you can’t just go up, so the surface has to be replaced by backups you carry with you. That’s redundancy: for anything that could fail and end the dive badly, you bring a second way to handle it. If you’re fuzzy on why that ceiling exists, our post on what really happens on a decompression dive sets it up.
A tour of the kit
Managing those bottles is a skill in itself, since switching to the wrong gas at the wrong depth is one of technical diving’s cardinal sins. Mixing and labelling them correctly is painstaking work, which is exactly why the people who blend them are so valued, as we wrote in why gas blenders are the most indispensable people in the shop.
A tec rig looks like chaos until you see it for what it is: a carefully built safety system.
Why it all looks harder than it is
Here’s the reassuring part. A tec rig looks overwhelming because you’re seeing the finished system all at once. No one straps it all on overnight. You build up to it one piece at a time, course by course, until each item is second nature and the whole thing feels less like a burden and more like a well-organised toolkit.
That gradual approach is the whole philosophy of the Tec Deep path, where depth and equipment are added in careful steps rather than all at once. If the gear has you curious rather than scared, that’s exactly the right instinct.
