The PADI Tec Gas Blender course teaches you to mix enriched air nitrox and helium-based blends safely and accurately, using one or more blending methods. It’s hands-on, needs no dives, and opens a door most recreational divers never walk through: making your own gas.

What a gas blender actually does

Behind every enriched air and technical dive is a precise mix of oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes helium. A certified gas blender is the person who produces those mixes: filling cylinders to a target blend, analyzing them, and keeping the whole process safe around high-pressure oxygen.

It’s a key job at any busy PADI Dive Center or Resort. Your work is what lets other divers do the thing they came for — get in the water. If you’re building a career in the dive industry, or you just want to stop depending on someone else for your fills, gas blending is the skill that makes you genuinely useful on the fill station.

What you’ll learn

The course runs over three practical application sessions. Real blending, not just theory. Through independent study and instructor-led review with us on Alona Beach, you’ll cover:

  • The advantages and disadvantages of different blending methods, so you can pick the right one for the gas and the gear in front of you.
  • How to blend enriched air nitrox and trimix to within one percent of your target mix.
  • The hazards of handling oxygen, and how to manage those risks properly.
  • How to oxygen-clean equipment, and what oxygen service actually requires.

By the end you’re a certified PADI Gas Blender, ready to mix enriched air and helium blends for yourself or for a shop.

Prerequisites

You don’t need to be a technical diver to become a blender. If you haven’t done nitrox yet, we’ll sort your enriched air certification first — it’s a short course and the natural stepping stone.

Who the Gas Blender course is for

This one’s a favorite with divers building a professional path: divemasters and instructors who want to run a fill station, and anyone moving into technical diving who’d rather understand their own gas than trust it blindly. If you’re already eyeing our Tec 40, 45, and 50 courses or Tec Sidemount, blending is a smart companion skill. The deeper and longer you go, the more your dive depends on getting the mix right.
